Cindy, a nine-year old girl, went to bed every night afraid. She was not afraid of ghosts - her fears were real. Her fears were generated from sexual abuse that happened regularly from a trusted family member. Imagine if the only home you knew was filled with recurring nightmares. And you weren't big enough to have a voice, or strong enough to make your voice heard. At KIDS Center, we give children a voice. We exist for one reason - to serve children who are victims of abuse and neglect. Cindy is one of over 2,600 cases of suspected child abuse that occur yearly in Central Oregon. This is real, and it is serious. And it is in our back yard. Consider these facts: 1 out of every 4 girls and 1 out of every 6 boys will be sexually abused before their eighteenth birthday. In 2006, there were 2,663 reported cases of child abuse in the Central Oregon tri-county area. KIDS Center, with current resources, was able to provide medical evaluations for 301 children and therapy services for 179 children. The current waiting period to be seen at the KIDS Center is 5 to 7 weeks due to caseload to resource ratio.
